We represent the Theravada (Hinayana) branch of
Buddhism. Our faith has involved into different forms in order to be
relevant to the different cultures it has served. Theravada, which literally
means 'the Teaching of the Elders', or 'the Ancient Teaching', is the oldest
surviving Buddhist school. It is generally closest to early Buddhism.
For many centuries Theravada Buddhism has
been dominated in Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. It is
also practiced by minorities in some parts of Asian countries such as
China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia
and Bangladesh. Today Theravada Buddhists number over 100 million
worldwide and in recent decades Theravada Buddhism has begun to take
root in the West.
The Ratanaram Buddhist Temple offers sermon and meditation services,
based on Theravada teaching, in
English, Lao, Burmese, and Thai. The temple is opened for tours and
often hosts lectures on Buddhism to students in the area. Visitors are
always welcomed with appointment. Here is some of our daily services:
